A revision of Afrotropical Oligopogon Loew, 1847 (Diptera: Asilidae) with the description of eighteen new species

The Afrotropical representatives of Oligopogon Loew, 1847 are reviewed. Twenty-nine species are recognised. Eleven previously described species considered valid are redescribed (ater Bigot, 1879, enigmatus Oldroyd, 1974, harlequini Oldroyd, 1970, hyacinthina (Bigot, 1876), hyalipennis (Oldroyd, 1960), mbambingomia Tomasovic & DeBakker, 2010, nigripennis Engel & Cuthbertson, 1937, nitidus Efflatoun, 1937, penicillatus Loew, 1858, pollinosus Engel, 1932, superciliatus Oldroyd, 1970) while 18 new species are described (adonis sp. n. (South Africa), agnostos sp. n. (Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia), argolagon sp. n. (South Africa), baringo sp. n. (Kenya), eburacta sp. n. (Ivory Coast, Kenya), freidbergi sp. n. (DR Congo, Kenya), hemistego sp. n. (Angola), kochi sp. n. (Namibia), mhlopeni sp. n. (South Afri­ca), napaios sp. n. (South Africa, Swaziland), ndumo sp. n. (Mozambique, South Africa), platypteron sp. n. (The Gambia, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania), rossi sp. n. (Zambia), snowi sp. n. (The Gambia), torsteni sp. n. (Botswana, South Africa), trichopteron sp. n. (South Africa), waltonae sp. n. (South Africa), zulu sp. n. (South Africa)). Two species previously associated with Afrotropical Oligopogon are discussed and excluded from the review (Dasypogon carvilius Walker, 1849 & Oligopogon hybotinus (Loew, 1847)). A species identification key is provided.
